Dental Crown

dental crown

If you want a smile that’s your crowning glory, you may need a crown to cover a tooth to help restore it to its normal shape and size. A crown can make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance.

1. What is Dental Crowns

Crowns are fixed prosthetic devices. Unlike removable devices such as dentures, which you can take out and clean daily, crowns are cemented onto existing teeth or implants, and can only be removed by a dentist.

A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold and metal alloys, acrylic and ceramic.

These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

2. When would a dental crown be needed?

A dental crown may be needed to:

– Protect a weak tooth (for example, from decay) from breaking or to hold together parts of a cracked tooth.

– Restore a broken tooth or a severely worn down tooth.

– Cover and support a tooth with a large filling and not much tooth remaining

– Cover misshaped or severely discolored teeth.

– Cover a dental implant.

– Cover a tooth treated with a root canal.

– To make a cosmetic modification.

3. The major advantages and benefits of dental crown

In general, the main advantages of having a crown are:

– Looks (aesthetics): You can improve the colour and the shape of the tooth or teeth with crowns. Porcelain has a more natural appearance and is much more resistant to stains than white filling material (composite).

– Protection: They provide the best possible protection to a heavily broken down tooth.

– Long lasting: Studies have shown that crowns last longer than any other type of dental restoration including all types of filling. That said, they aren’t as good as natural teeth and once prepared for a crown, a tooth will always need a crown- there’s no going back.

4. How a crown is done

– Your dentist gives you a local anesthetic.

– To make room for the crown, your dentist files down the tooth that needs to be restored.

– An impression of the filed-down tooth and nearby teeth is taken. This impression is used to custom make your final crown. The crown is built using restorative material (material used for fillings) based on the impression. The final crown will be the right shape for your mouth.

– Until your final crown is ready, your dentist places a temporary crown over the tooth that needs to be restored. The temporary crown is made from an impression of your tooth before it was filed down. It protects your tooth until the final crown is ready. A temporary crown may not have the same shape and colour as a final crown.

– On your next visit, your dentist takes off the temporary crown and puts on the final one. Your dentist checks to make sure the crown is the right fit, shape, colour and bite. If it is, your dentist cements the crown into place.

These are the steps dentists most often follow in making a crown, but your tooth may need special care. You may need orthodontic treatment, gum treatment or root canal treatment. It may take more than 2 visits to your dentist, or your visits may last longer.

At DONG NAM Dental, the basic crown teeth procedure is as follows:

Next dong nam dentalStep 1: Initial Consultation

To find out whether dental crown are the best option for your smile, visit a qualified dental implant dentist. Your dentist will likely take X – rays film and assess your overall health, dental health, and gum tissue to ensure that your mouth can support dental crown.

If the tooth has decay or if there is a risk for infection or injury, your dentist may need to perform a root canal.

Next dong nam dentalStep 2: Anaesthetic

First the area is made numb using anaesthetic. This is necessary most of the time but not always. If for example, the tooth has been root filled and the margins of the crown preparation are to stay above the gum line (supra- gingival), no anaesthetic may be needed. However if the dentist will be working near or under the gum, it is better to have some in- it also helps to take your mind off the area allowing you to relax.

Next dong nam dentalStep 3: Preparing (shaping) the tooth

Before placing the crown, your dentist may need to build up the foundation for the crown, especially if your tooth is so broken or decayed that it will not support the crown. One type of foundation is called a post-and-core foundation.

Dentist with the support equipment will take an impression of the tooth, as well as those surrounding it, and send it away to a dental lab, so the permanent crown can be made accordingly and natural looking, and possibly placing temporary crowns. A temporary crown is placed as a protective cover for your prepared tooth while you wait for the permanent crown to be made.
